AVIARY COMPLEX FOR OBP PROGRAM BY ACERMAX

AVIARY COMPLEX FOR OBP PROGRAM BY ACERMAX

Acermax has been working with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment in the construction of an aviary complex for the Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Program.

Working with the then DPIPWE (now the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania) on the Orange-bellied Parrot Recovery Program in 2019 was one of our most interesting and rewarding projects. The project comprised 10 multi-bay aviaries 7.8m x 22.5m and 4 single bay quarantine units at 7.8 x 5.6m as well as additional storage facilities.

The process began with an extended design phase to ensure maximum chance of success in increasing the number of these critically-endangered birds, and rebuilding a viable population for release back into the wild. In 2017 there were only 17 birds known to exist in the wild. The captive breeding program has been successful and a number of birds released at Melaleuca in the south-west. This year 70 of the migratory birds have returned to their breeding ground from the south-east of the mainland and the captive population is well over 300.

Whilst this is by far the largest project Acermax has been involved in to date, we often work with bird owners to build custom aviaries. We have recently supplied a 7.0 x 4.0m unit with multiple internal sections for segregation - we will post details and pictures of this job soon. Acermax Custom units are available through NeoStore - we look forward to discussing your project.
