Tasmania has a long history of bushfires. Many devastating fires have occurred over the years, among the most horrific in recent history being the one in 1967 which burned for several weeks and resulted in the deaths of 62 people and the destruction of thousands of homes and buildings.
Another major bushfire in Tasmania occurred in 2013; it broke out near Dunalley and spread quickly. Thousands of residents had to be evacuated and more than 100 homes were lost. This fire was particularly challenging to control because of strong winds and dry conditions.
In order to protect property from bushfire damage, there are a number of proactive measures that can be implemented. One important strategy is to create a fire break around homes and buildings. This can be done by clearing vegetation and other combustible materials within a certain distance of the structure. This can help to slow or stop the spread of a fire, giving firefighters more time to respond and control the blaze.
Another strategy is to ensure that homes and buildings are constructed using fire-resistant materials. This can include using non-combustible materials for the roof and walls, as well as installing fire-resistant windows and doors. Also, it is important to have suitable water storage for emergency use.
Above all, having a well-prepared bushfire survival plan in place is important. This plan should include things like identifying evacuation routes, having emergency supplies and equipment on hand, and knowing when to evacuate.
